Yes and No.
If someone asked me what I would've guessed the price to be before getting it, I would've said roughly 60 dollars. Why? Because my boyfriend is a video game junkie and I see what he generally pays for an entire range of quality and content in many different games. Just released console and PC games tend to be at the 60 dollar range and it has been that way for a long time. "Deluxe" Editions, Collectors Editions, etc are pricier, obviously.
That's not even beginning to mention the crappy Facebook games, app games, and mmo's that people end up spending hundred's to thousand's of dollars on from in game purchases or subscriptions. My boyfriend and I have collectively payed well over a thousand dollars on World of Warcraft in the past 8 years, which has a store and a subscription. If you're getting more than stick figures on a side scroller they think they can charge whatever they want.
Second of all, it's EA games. Therefore I expected to over-pay to begin with. Never have I ever been pleased with the amount I spent on their games/expansions.
In 2009 it was 70 dollars for the The Sims 3 Collectors Edition, Same as the Sims 4 Premium Edition. The game alone was at 50 dollars, 10 dollars cheaper than the Sims 3 but still within similar range of Sims 4 and average PC/Console releases.
I don't remember the original prices for expansions, I got a lot as gifts.. but I know in like 2013 the Pets expansion for Sims 3 was 50 dollars, Literally the same as the base game. World Adventures was 40 dollars.
Sure they'd go on sale sometimes, but that is insanely expensive. Still, I know if someone bought each expansion when they came out, they would have spent over 300 dollars. How much exactly, I don't know, but definitely over 300 dollars. And that's sad, because I've gotten some expansions and packs that I was so disappointed with that I just removed them so I wouldn't have to look at the crappy content, and of course, wished no one wasted their money on it for me. (Diesel pack, to list one.)
And even the Sims 3 Store could be ridiculously expensive.
Here's some stuff and their prices in 2010:
Ultra Lounge Youth Set = $16.50
Ultra Lounge Set = $19
Mischief Makers' Bedrooms = $12.50
BahHaus = $13.50
Collectionne Stäncké = $13.50
Faire Folk Furnishings + Attire = $18
Bayside = $14.50
Storybook Set = $19.00
Hewnsman: = $20.00
Ultra Lounge = $20.00
Regal Living = $24.00
I wouldn't want to pay some of those prices for a whole expansion, not to mention just a furniture pack.
Within just four months of being out Sims 3 had (give or take) over 300 dollars worth of crap to push onto consumers. No one will buy ALL content but they made enough to adhere to many peoples tastes and get a larger percentage of their customers to purchase their junk.
These prices seem insane to me, but it paints a clear picture of how simply over-priced their products are, since always and forever.
So yes- It's too expensive for what I get.
But no- I was not expecting it to be cheap or even priced reasonably.
There are better games out their for way better prices. I personally just like this Sims enough to spend the money and obviously, EA knows that.
